CALAMATIE SUE
On April Fool’s Day, 2000, Tom and Sue Jarrell became Drycreek Trampas and Calamatie Sue, and began their adventure into the world of Cowboy Action Shooting. It seemed to be a great way to start the new century.
There were three local clubs near Beckley, WV, and the members of all three were eager to help us get started. And did we need help! Trampas was much more comfortable with the guns than I was. It had been 30 years since I had touched one. I was so terrible, but you know how these Cowboys are. They weren’t about to let me wimp out. All I ever heard was encouragement, and I sure needed it.
I must say that my greatest supporter and mentor was Crazy Ray. Before my first shoot, he took me to a back range to try the shotgun. He said I would be fine, and that he would guide me every step of the way. He meant it. If it hadn’t been for Ray, that might have been my only shoot. He was the epitome of the Cowboy way. His passing put a void in this sport.
Since that first experience, we have been hooked. Both of us have improved greatly. We have made so many friends that we feel blessed beyond comprehension. SASS Cowboys and their families are the greatest people in the world. I hope that all of them realize that.
I'm proud to be a Dixie Cowgirl!
